Ledger responds to the reason for phasing out the Nano S: Limited memory makes it difficult to support new features and security enhancements.
PANews, June 27 – Ledger's Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet stated on the X platform that the current 320kb memory of the Nano S is insufficient to support new applications, feature submissions, and updates. The memory is nearly filled by just LedgerOS, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and exchange applications, making it impossible to support multi-application parallelism, clear signature improvements, transaction checks with Ledger Sync™, exchanges (such as interactions with THORChain), device language packs, and other new features and security enhancements. In a complex encryption environment, these functions are crucial for improving clarity, usability, and security, requiring stronger hardware support. Guillemet emphasized that existing Nano S users, if their device is functioning properly and their mnemonic phrase is backed up, will have their assets remain secure and accessible, with the basic operations (receiving/sending/trading) of mainstream tokens like BTC/ETH unaffected. However, upgrading to a new device will provide more comprehensive application support, future new features, and an optimal security experience. Previously, news that Ledger is about to phase out the Nano S has caused dissatisfaction among users, who have questioned whether the company is forcing them to purchase new devices.
