The U.S. prosecution is expected to complete the evidence presentation for the Roman Storm case by July 25.
The criminal trial against Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm has entered a critical phase in the Southern District Federal Court of New York.
According to reports, during the fourth day of court hearings on Thursday local time, FBI agents and other staff appeared as key witnesses to testify, providing details and evidence related to the Storm investigation.
However, due to the complexity of the legal arguments and the uncertainty of witnesses and evidence, the prosecution is expected to complete all evidentiary work by July 25.
Currently, Storm faces three felony charges including conspiracy to launder money, operating an unlicensed remittance business, and violating U.S. sanctions laws, which could result in a maximum of 45 years in prison if convicted.
As the prosecution's presentation of evidence draws to a close, the case is about to迎来重要转折. The defense team plans to call witnesses such as technical experts and privacy advocates to present their case, focusing on the technical neutrality of Tornado Cash as an open-source tool, as well as the necessity of cryptocurrency privacy services for protecting specific user groups.
It is worth noting that the uniqueness of this trial lies in its potential to set a key judicial precedent. Although the presiding judge recently rejected the defense's motion regarding the invalidity of certain evidence, he allowed for a defense on the constitutional controversy of "code as speech."
Legal experts indicate that, regardless of the final judgment result, this case will leave a profound mark on the history of cryptocurrency development, with impacts that may far exceed Tornado Cash itself, and directly relate to the framework definition of compliance boundaries for the future development of blockchain privacy technologies.
The current case proceedings are progressing according to the established procedures. It is expected that after the prosecution concludes its presentation of evidence, the defense will immediately initiate the witness summons process. The entire trial process is expected to last 3-4 weeks.
